Sweeping of Thunder Bay Streets Underway

City of Thunder Bay crews will be out on the roads to begin the spring street sweeping program, starting on Monday, April 27.
Spring sweeping begins once temperatures consistently rise above zero and focuses on removing sand spread over the winter months on streets and sidewalks. Downtown core areas, bike lanes, and arterial and collector streets are completed first, before operations move into residential areas.

Washouts and Road Closures Due to Rain and Spring Melt

The City of Thunder Bay is advising residents that some rural areas are experiencing washouts and road closures as a result of rainfall and spring melt.
Roads crews are actively monitoring conditions and responding where needed to address damaged areas, maintain safety, and protect infrastructure. Some roads may be temporarily closed or restricted until water levels recede and necessary repairs can be completed.

Automated garbage cart delivery to begin for remaining city households

Beginning May 4, delivery of pre-assembled 240-litre wheeled garbage carts will begin for remaining Thunder Bay residential households that did not receive a garbage cart in 2025’s soft launch. Delivery of carts will continue over several weeks.
Residents are asked to store their garbage cart beside or behind their house or in their garage.

April 23, 2026 - City Council recognized volunteers in the community at the 48th Annual Citizens of Exceptional Achievement Awards ceremony, held on Wednesday evening. The Awards recognize individuals and organizations who volunteer their time to improve and enrich our community.
