Recycling carts coming for residential households

As of July 1, Thunder Bay residents will use wheeled recycling carts to place recycling at the curb, and blue bags will no longer be accepted.
Cart delivery to residential household addresses will begin the week of May 5 and continue into June. GFL Environmental Inc. (also known as Green For Life) will be responsible for setting up the new recycling cart system.

A prolonged period of cold, wet weather this spring has delayed the official opening of bike lanes in Thunder Bay.
Bike lanes open after street sweeping has been completed, typically on May 1. The City continues to sweep roads and bike lanes of winter sand and debris. An update will be provided when lanes are clear.

North Core Streetscapes renewal project starts up for summer

Work on the North Core Streetscapes renewal will continue this summer on Court Street, with work shifting to Red River Road.
The streetscape work started in 2023, and this spring, crews have started to install granite planters and concrete pavers on Court Street as the ground has thawed enough to resume work.

Reduced Load Restrictions Lifted 2024

The City of Thunder Bay will remove seasonal load restrictions on Monday, April 22 at 7 a.m.
Heavy load restrictions are put into effect each spring to protect roads from damage until the frost is out of the ground. Roadway weight restrictions were instituted on March 11 in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation’s Provincial Reduced Load Regulations.

2024 Spring street sweeping underway

City crews will be out on local roads to begin the City of Thunder Bay’s spring street sweeping program, starting on Monday, April 15.
Spring sweeping occurs once temperatures rise above zero and focus on removing sand spread over the winter months on streets and sidewalks. Downtown core areas, bike lanes, and arterial and collector streets are completed first before operations move on to residential areas.
