All of the following clinics and services are coordinated by the Support Services Coordinator with the various agencies and organizations responsible for the service as indicated.

Grief support and outreach counselling program

The Grief Support Program is held every second Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The group is facilitated by a social worker from Hospice Northwest and assists individuals 55 plus who are experiencing concerns related to grief, loss, or any other issue. Counselling and support are non-denominational and no cost to participants.

Monthly

Blood pressure clinic

  • First Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; September to June. Note: There is no clinic in July and August.
  • First come, first served system.
  • Held in the Cedar Room with two (2) nurse volunteers and two (2) receptionists. There is also a volunteer convener.
  • This is a Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre activity, and the money collected (donations) go to the Board of Directors.

Hearing screening clinic

  • Second Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; September to June. Note: There is no clinic in July and August.
  • Held in the Cedar Room.
  • Appointments (20 minute intervals) can be made and are organized by the Support Services Coordinator.
  • This free service is provided by the Canadian Hearing Society.

Health & wellness presentations

  • Health and wellness presentations focus on health issues and information relevant to people 55 plus.
  • Presentations are coordinated by the Support Services Coordinator with various community organizations, such as the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, Stroke Prevention Program, CNIB, etc.
  • Registration is required for presentations anticipating a large crowd.
  • There is no cost to participate.

Breast health screening coach

  • Held 2- 3 days throughout the month from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • The bus parks in the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre parking lot.
  • Please contact 807-684-7777 to schedule an appointment.
  • There is no cost for the program; however, participants must be 50 plus.

Good food box

  • Good Food Box - Thunder Bay is a volunteer powered, community based, food security initiative administered by the Northwestern Ontario Women's Centre since 2005. It is a fruit and vegetable distribution program that aims to improve access to good food by making quality, fresh produce available at a low cost.
  • The program exists for those who have difficulty affording or accessing produce from the supermarket. In 2013, the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre became a host site.
  • Customers order and pay for their box before the first Monday of the month and pick up dates are on the Third Wednesday of the month between 3 & 4 pm.
  • *New: Only one size good food box and it is $22.00.  Please note that orders are payable in cash only at the time of order.
  • A volunteer assists the Support Services Coordinator with the program at the 55 Plus Centre with pick up and registration and acts as the liaison between the 55 Plus Centre and the N.W.O. Women's Centre.

Workshops

  • The Support Services Coordinator identifies and seeks out partnerships with local organizations to provide workshops free of charge for community members. 
  • Workshops are either half day or full day events. Lunch and refreshments are provided at the events if funding is available. Note: Sponsors are recruited to help fund each event.
