Kashechewan Residents Returning Home Today

May 12, 2016 - Residents of Kashechewan First Nation that were evacuated to Thunder Bay are returning to their home community today as planned. A total of eight flights will depart the city for the community near James Bay.

"Our host efforts have gone very smoothly without any significant issues," said Deputy Fire Chief Dave Paxton.  "We are pleased to have been able to welcome the residents of Kashechewan during their time of need and wish everyone a safe return."

Section of Chamberlain Street Closed

May 12, 2016 - A section of Chamberlain Street, between Shuniah and Egan Streets, has been closed to all traffic as efforts to restore water service at the Chamberlain Pumping Station continue.

The duration of the closure is unknown at this time. Motorists are asked to avoid travelling in the area and obey all posted signage.

Questions may be directed to Infrastructure and Operations Dispatch at 625-2195.

More information will be distributed as it becomes available.

Spring Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Begins Next Week

May 12, 2016 - Curbside collection of leaf and yard waste was delayed due to the late arrival of spring. Collection will take place between Tuesday, May 17 and Friday, May 27 on residents' regular recycling day during that two-week-period.

Homeowners are reminded that residential leaf and yard waste for curbside pickup must be stored in Kraft paper bags only. Plastic bags are not accepted. Kraft bags are available at most hardware and grocery stores.

Free Compost Available to Residents Beginning May 13

May 11, 2016 - Compost will be available to all residents at no charge at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility on Friday, May 13 while quantities last, weather permitting.

Access to the compost pick-up area is located east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Road. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.

Kashechewan Evacuees Preparing to Return Home

May 10, 2016 - Residents of Kashechewan First Nation that were evacuated to Thunder Bay on May 1, due to a threat of flooding in their home community are expected to return home as early as Thursday. The First Nation has rescinded the evacuation order indicating it is now safe for residents to return to the community.
