City Celebrates Youth Week and Youth Arts Week

May 1, 2015 - This week is all about youth in Thunder Bay according to Acting Mayor Rebecca Johnson, who officially proclaimed May 1-7 as "Youth Week" today at City Hall. National Youth Week celebrates the positive contributions that youth make to their communities, their achievements, and their volunteerism. Free Week at Solid Waste & Recycling Facility runs May 3 to 10

May 1, 2015 - Tipping fees for residents driving cars and non-commercial light trucks will once again be waived this year as part of "˜Free Week' at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility, which runs from May 3 to 10.

Regular tipping fees will apply to all loads brought onto the site in commercial vehicles. Thunder Bay Police will also be on-hand to inspect vehicles and ensure all loads are properly secured.

Habitat for Humanity Reuse Days during Landfill Free Week

May 1, 2015 - Representatives from the Thunder Bay branch of Habitat for Humanity will once again be participating in Free Week, running May 3 to 10, at the City's Solid Waste and Recycling Facility.

Habitat will be on-site from May 4 to 9 to collect gently-used items such as windows, doors, building supplies, working appliances, and furnishings from Thunder Bay residents during Free Week at the landfill site.

Spring Curbside Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Begins May 5

May 1, 2015 - The City of Thunder Bay's spring curbside collection of organic leaf and yard waste will take place between May 5 and 15, 2015, on your regular recycling day.

Homeowners are encouraged to use Kraft (paper bags) for garden waste because these bags decompose naturally. Paper bags are placed directly into the compost and become compost too. Kraft bags are available at most hardware and grocery stores. Regular bag weight limits of 40 lbs or 18 kg or less apply.

Failure to Install Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms Earns Tickets

April 29, 2015 – A Prince Arthur Boulevard property owner has been ticketed for failing to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as required by the Ontario Fire Code after Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire at the residence on Monday, April 27. Each ticket carries a fine of $360.
