2021 Road Work Season has begun

The City of Thunder Bay is investing $32 million in 2021 on road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.
This month marks the start of a busy road work season that can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. All residents are reminded to reduce their speed, be alert, watch for workers and drive with extra care in construction zones.

Heavy Load Restrictions to Be Lifted May 10

The City of Thunder Bay will be removing seasonal load restrictions on Monday, May 10 at 8:00 am. The roadway weight restrictions are instituted each spring in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s Provincial Reduced Load Regulations, to protect the roads from damage until the frost is out of the ground.

Water Street North Reduced to Two Lanes on Thursday

As a result of a scheduled hydrant repair, Water Street North between Bay Street and Cumberland Street will be reduced from four lanes to two lanes (one northbound and one southbound), beginning on Thursday, April 15, at 8 am. Slower traffic can be expected during the repair.
Motorists are asked to drive with caution in the repair area.

Public Consultation on Red Light Cameras Begins

The City of Thunder Bay is studying the possibility of implementing a Red Light Camera Program at 10 intersections where accidents have been caused by red light running. Residents are invited to take an online survey through the City’s public engagement platform, and share their input on red light cameras for Thunder Bay.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s Reduced Load Period is expected to come into effect shortly. In conjunction with this, Heavy Load Restrictions will apply within the City of Thunder Bay limits beginning at 8 am on Monday, March 15.
Heavy Load Restrictions will apply to all streets within the City of Thunder Bay limits, with the exception of those streets or portions of streets listed below, which are exempt:
