On January 1, 1995, Thunder Bay celebrated 25 years as a City after amalgamation. To mark the occasion, the 25th Anniversary Planning Committee created a time capsule to be opened in another 25 years, on January 1, 2020. Many community groups and City departments joined in, adding letters, photos, and other historic items to the time capsule. The capsule was opened by the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, on January 1, 2020, at the New Year's Levee and Community Pancake Breakfast at the O'Kelly VC Armoury. The items have now been added to the City of Thunder Bay Archives’ permanent collection.
Below is a full list of all the items that were included, listed by each organization that donated them. Pictures of many items are available here, and more can be found at the City of Thunder Bay Archives. Click on any organization’s name to see what they put into the time capsule.
For information on the time capsules opened in 2008, visit the Thunder Bay 2008 time capsule page.
