  • City Crews Respond to Victoria Avenue West Water Main Break

    The City is currently assessing a water main break on Victoria Avenue West that is resulting in disruptions to traffic. 

    To facilitate repairs, Victoria Avenue West will be closed in both directions between Edward Street and Leland Avenue North tomorrow, Nov.

    COVID-19: City Council Committed to Being Safe and Staying Home

    With Thunder Bay now in risk level Yellow: Protect (strengthened measures) of the Province’s COVID-19 Response Framework, City Council will meet virtually this evening with the exception of essential staff from the City Clerk’s Office, Krista Power, City Clerk, announced today.

    Although this is not required as gathering limits allow Council to meet in Chambers, due to the move to yellow and increasing numbers of COVID-19 in the community, City Council wishes to signal the importance of the decisions.

    Local Firefighter Named to Canadian Olympic Bobsleigh Team

    Firefighter Stephanie Drost has been newly named to the Canadian Bobsleigh Team on track to the Beijing 2022 Olympics. She is one of the Brakemen for team Canada which has five pilots and eight brakemen in the system.

    The City’s Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) met today with community partners as part of its ongoing management of the COVID-19 situation, and discussed efforts in managing the recent increase in cases and navigating through these times.

    On Tuesday, Nov. 17, three new pedestrian crossovers open in the city at these locations:

    - Pioneer Drive and Wyndale Street
    - Court Street and McVicar Street
    - Neebing Avenue and Mary Street

    Crossovers make it safe, easy and convenient for people to cross the street.

  • McKellar Ward Councillor to take Leave of Absence

    McKellar Ward Councillor Brian Hamilton announced today that he will be taking a leave of absence from his Council duties until the new year for personal reasons.

    In his absence, he has advised that constituents are welcome to contact any At-Large Members of Council if they have questions or concerns that relate to McKellar Ward or city issues in general.

    Greg Hankkio has been appointed Fire Chief for the City of Thunder Bay.

    Chief Hankkio started his career as a firefighter with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue in 1991.

    PRO Kids Recognized for Excellence & Launches ‘Press Play’

    PRO Kids has been recognized at the provincial level by Parks and Recreation Ontario receiving the Award of Excellence in Access and Equity for a community population size over 100,000. For over 20 years, PRO Kids has served children and youth in Thunder Bay when their families cannot afford the cost to register them in community activities.

    With the recent spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the community this past week, Mayor Bill Mauro is strongly urging residents to continue to follow all public health guidelines and prevention measures.

    “As I’ve stated before, we know the measures we must take to save lives – particularly the lives of the most vulnerable citizens such as our parents and grandparents, people with compromised immune systems and respiratory ailments,” said Mayor Mauro.
