Leaf and Yard Waste Collection Scheduled for May 31 - June 10May 9, 2022 – Curbside collection of leaf and yard waste will be delayed due to the late arrival of spring, taking place between May 31 – June 10, on regular recycling days during that two-week-period.
Only Kraft (paper bags) will be accepted for leaf and yard waste.

May 3, 2022 – The City is experiencing a shortage of School Crossing Guards throughout the city, causing vacancies at some locations for the foreseeable future.
“We have communicated the shortage and vacant crossing locations with the impacted schools, and are working to prioritize those crossings with the greatest need so that they are covered first,” said Michelle Riemer, Crossing Guard Field Supervisor.

City Partners to Promote Mental Health Week May 2 - 8The 71st Mental Health Week was launch today at Marina Park with an official proclamation by the Mayor of Thunder Bay. The City, local chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Thunder Bay Police Service, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, Superior North EMS, and Thunder Bay Transit came together to launch the week of awareness activities that will run May 2 – 8.
City Joins Province in Emergency Preparedness WeekThis year, Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week takes place from May 1- 7, and like the past two years, it will occur while we continue to battle the impact of COVID-19 and its variants of concern.
The theme for this year’s EP Week is Emergency Preparedness: Be Ready for Anything.
National Youth Week Returns May 1 - 7The City of Thunder Bay is excited to once again announce the return of National Youth Week from May 1 to May 7. Youth Week features FREE events and programming targeted towards all youth ages 10 to 24.
Delay in Opening City Bike LanesThe opening of the City of Thunder Bay’s bike lanes has been delayed this year due to snow and weather conditions. The City will continue to monitor weather conditions and will provide an update as to when the bike lanes can officially open.
City Expanding its Municipal Recycling Program Beginning May 1Effective May 1, the City of Thunder Bay will be expanding its recycling program to allow residents to recycle all #1 through #7 coded plastic containers.
The recycling program expansion will allow residents to recycle plastic containers such as yogurt, margarine and sour cream containers.
City Launches Downtown Improvement Grant Program for 2022Two of the goals of the relaunched Downtown Improvement Grant Program are making Thunder Bay’s cores more inviting and vibrant.
The program, implemented through the amended Community Improvement Plan and administered by the City’s Planning Services Division, allows for eligible property or business owners to apply for up to four grants to encourage redevelopment and investment in the North and South cores, as well as the Westfort business area.
