City’s Outdoor Skating Rinks Open to the Public on December 19
December 18, 2025 – Most of the City’s outdoor boarded skating rinks will be open for public use on Friday, December 19, 2025. This includes the eight Parks Supervised locations and the Vickers Park skating loop.
Pioneer Ridge Achieves Butterfly Approach AccreditationDecember 16, 2025 - Pioneer Ridge Long-Term Care and Senior Services has become the first long-term care home in the City of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario to transform its care model from a traditional medical, task-oriented approach to an emotion-based model of care known as the Butterfly Approach.
The Butterfly Approach focuses on engaging with residents in the present moment and enriching their daily lives with meaning and purpose.

New Signalized Pedestrian Crossing Activated at Four Locations in Thunder BayDecember 12, 2025 – To further improve safety for both pedestrians and drivers, the City has activated four new signalized pedestrian crossings that are now available to the public. The locations are Arthur Street and Leland Ave, 1260 and 1077 Golf Links Road, and 853 Red River Road.
City Provides Update on Waterfront Transit Terminal Construction TimelineDecember 5, 2025 – The City of Thunder Bay is advising the public of a delay in the construction of the new Waterfront Transit Terminal. Due to delays in receiving key materials, we now expect completion of the terminal in February 2026.
“HO HO HOLD the Waste” Upcycled Holiday Ornament ChallengeTo encourage waste reduction during the festive season, Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Services is pleased to announce its 2025 “Ho Ho Hold the Waste” Upcycled Ornament Challenge, inviting local residents to show their creative and sustainable ways of reducing waste during the holiday season.
Upcycling is the process of transforming waste or unwanted products into new items of higher value through creative reuse.
City Council Approves 10-Year Smart Growth Action PlanThunder Bay City Council has officially approved the Smart Growth Action Plan, a comprehensive 10-year plan designed to guide the community toward sustainable growth. The plan sets out more than 100 actions aimed at strengthening the City's tax base, attracting new residents, and building a more connected and complete Thunder Bay.

SnowDay on the Waterfront celebrates winter with experience-based outdoor programming and large-scale artworks that draw residents and visitors to Marina Park each year.
