The waterfront skating rink at Prince Arthur’s Landing is now officially open for the season. Residents and visitors of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come to the waterfront to enjoy the rink and the many other winter activities and amenities available this season.

Residents of Bearskin Lake First Nation that were evacuated to Thunder Bay recently due to flooding in their home community are beginning to return home today.

Multiple flights are scheduled over the next few days to transfer the over 150 residents that have been hosted in Thunder Bay since November 14.

The City would like to remind residents not to place waste and recycling bags or cans on snowbanks during collection days.

“Waste on snowbanks poses a danger to both residents and waste collection crews,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services.

The City of Thunder Bay, Fort William First Nation, FWFN Economic Development, and the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC), have successfully completed workshops over the three year First Nation - Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI) to develop joint community economic development plans and strategies.

“This is a major milestone towards strengthening our relationship and the regional economy,” said Eric Zakrewski, CEO - CEDC.

Due to weather conditions, city-wide calendar parking restrictions have come into effect today.

“The implementation of calendar parking restrictions for this winter is based on the recent snowfall,” said Jonathan Paske, Supervisor – Parking Authority.

The City of Thunder Bay is preparing to receive approximately 180 people from Bearskin Lake First Nation over the course of the next 48 hours as the community declared a state of emergency on Sunday due to an ice jam along the Severn River, causing water to rise rapidly close by.

Large amounts of ice and water are already covering up main roadways including those to the airport.

A delegation of business, government and labour representatives from Thunder Bay have just returned from Toronto following meetings with senior Provincial and City of Toronto representatives focused on discussing the many mutual benefits associated with Thunder Bay’s long-standing and important transportation relationship with Toronto.

The delegation also outlined the transportation linkages between the two cities and the need to address domestic content requirements.

In 2019, the City of Thunder Bay invested $30 million on road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.

“We’d like to thank residents for their patience during the road work season which often resulted in road closures, detours and delays,” said Kayla Dixon, Director – Engineering & Operations.

CN has completed repairs to the James Street Swing Bridge and it is scheduled to open to traffic this Saturday. This follows the closure of the bridge in October 2013 due to a fire and a lengthy legal battle with CN who was ultimately ordered by the courts to uphold its contractual obligation to repair and reopen the bridge to all vehicles under the 1906 Agreement.
