Cumberland Street North, between Red River Road and Van Norman Street, will be closed on July 8 to complete line and parking spot painting. Once work is complete—expected this afternoon—this section of Cumberland Street will become one-way with southbound traffic only until the end of the patio season.

The City of Thunder Bay is issuing an extreme heat warning alert to the community as part of the COVID-19 Severe Weather Response Plan. Environment Canada has indicated a dome of intense heat will move into Northwestern Ontario today with temperatures expected to climb to the low- to mid- thirties, and humidex values near 40°C are expected over the weekend.

Scheduled work on the CP Rail line will necessitate closure of a portion of Island Drive on Tuesday, July 6 from 8 am to 5 pm. During this time, traffic will be directed to a temporary detour using Baffin Street.

The upcoming Canada Day holiday will result in changes to waste and recycling collection in Area 1, Area 2 and Area 3. Garbage and recycling collection will be one day earlier during the week of June 28 for residents in these Areas.

Traffic in the construction zone at Edward Street and Redwood Avenue will soon be further reduced to accommodate construction of the roundabout. 

Starting on Monday, June 28, southbound traffic on Edward Street will be maintained to Redwood Avenue and then from there, diverted to the west along Redwood Avenue.

S&P Global Ratings has reaffirmed the City of Thunder Bay’s credit rating of AA, with a stable outlook. 

Over the next two years the City is expected to maintain overall sound financial results including positive budgetary performance, low municipal debt burden and a robust liquidity position.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and out of respect for Indigenous communities across Canada who are grieving, the City of Thunder Bay will not be holding a large, in-person Canada Day event this year. Instead, event organizers will be offering a variety of self-guided Canada Day activities for residents to participate in virtually from July 1-4.
