The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) continues to move forward with the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) program despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is continuing remotely with great success.

The Phase 2 Summer 2020 Operations report was presented and approved by City Council last night with a number of services and facilities reopening.

Algoma Child Care Centre has been designated as a priority site for reopening municipal child care as early as June 29.

Simpson Street northbound from William Street to Pacific Avenue is now closed to traffic for approximately eight weeks for watermain work and resurfacing. For June 23 only, southbound traffic is also being re-routed.

City Council approved an interest-free loan program last night that will allow property owners to borrow funds from the city to assist in the replacement of privately owned lead water service pipes.

Lead enters the water when it sits still for long periods of time in lead pipes or fixtures.

As of Tuesday June 23, the Recreation & Culture Division will be accepting registrations for children’s programming this summer. Programs are scheduled to begin on July 13 and will include modified Summer Camp and Playgrounds Program options.

The City of Thunder Bay’s Canada Day event, presented by Ontario Power Generation, will look different this year, but there's no shortage of activities that people can enjoy safely from their homes.

With restrictions still in place due to COVID-19, the Canada Day Celebration will be virtual this year with a three-day program with 50^th Anniversary flare.

As part of the re-opening process, Provincial Order now permits gradually resuming visitation at Long Term Care and Retirement Homes. This three phase process commences with permitting outdoor visits.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting public events, Indigenous Relations and Inclusion, City of Thunder Bay, along with co-hosts Thunder Bay Public Library, Red Sky Performance and National Film Board of Canada, teamed up to provide virtual programming from June 19 to June 25.

“Although the conditions are not ideal to celebrate Indigenous People's Month in person this year, we are fortunate to have a creative and dedicated circle of partners to help make this month a memorable one,” said Regina Mandamin,.

Thunder Bay City Council has declared the third Saturday in June to be Neighbour Day each year. Thunder Bay’s first Neighbour Day is set for Saturday, June 20.

A report recommending ways that the City can help restaurants and retailers set up outdoor patios or displays was approved by City Council last night, including waiving permit fees and specific zoning enforcement, and expediting the process for owners. 

“By finding innovative ways to allow access to City property and private parking areas and by streamlining the process, we are helping more local restaurants take advantage of patio season,” said Mayor Bill Mauro.
